    Project and Uses
Film Construction Training in East London Shown in an event in s to showcase training initiative in the lead up to the Olympics
  • Had initial meeting to plan content, style and approach (as with all projects)
  • Set up channels of communication to be used between Flexible Films and client ( as with all projects)
  • Produced release forms for subjects to sign (as with all projects)
  • Filmed construction sites, 3 subjects, a Councillor and areas around Newham
  • Guided team on voice-over script writing

  • Filmed specific montage sequences in which to include text information

Film A Day at the Premises Business Promo for website to illustrate studio facilities and client satisfaction
  • Agreed on what areas to include, sequences to film and content of interviews
  • Discussed what style would best reflect the Premises image
  • Spent 7 hours at the studios filming Talking Head interviews and sequences
  • Showed managers the first edit
  • They suggested some changes – different music, telephone call at end of film and session times
  • Changes were made and agreed
  • Uploaded film to Premises Youtube channel

Film Strengthening Communities Purchased equipment & trained 6 families to film themselves during a parenting programme. Used as a learning Resource.
  • Agreed Flexible Films would act as project managers and worked out structure of project.
  • Taught subjects how to use camera and guided them on content of interviews
  • Met families every month to collect and view tapes – some were in Manchester, Liverpool and Bradford
  • Logged and transcribed all tapes as project developed – 40 hours of footage in total
  • Edited a 20-minute version for REF’s AGM in June 2006
  • Edited a 35-minute film when all subjects had completed the course
  • Subtitled entire film

Film Keeping The Silence Fiction film used in training to illustrate the grooming process.
  • Wrote script based on Sam Warner’s theories
  • Made appropriate changes to script from Sam’s feedback
  • Advertised for, auditioned and cast 3 actors
  • Drew a storyboard and prepared for filming
  • Held rehearsals before filming
  • Dressed set for film
  • Directed and filmed a 2 day shoot
  • Edited footage into a 12 minute film with text, music and time-lapse photography

Film Working in Public Protection Used both in UK and overseas as a recruitment tool. The film is shown to new staff as an introduction to the different departments.
  • Wrote a presentation script with Steve Miller- Head of Public Protection
  • Filmed Steve talking to camera, at work and around town
  • Filmed areas around Newham
  • Edited new footage using the timeline from last Newham Public Protection film made in November 2005
  • We had already produced a film focusing on 6 departments of Public Protection and this was re-edited with the new footage
  • We had previously liased with 6 departments, arranged the filming schedule, identified subjects and sequences to film

  • Met with Marc Lopatin (Producer) to discuss content of film
  • Visited Bradley’s Spanish bar to recce the location
  • Met with actors before filming to discuss storyline and filming day
  • Drew up a production schedule for the 5 hour shoot
  • Filmed and directed actors in Tottenham Court Rd
  • Set up lighting equipment, camera and monitor
  • Directed 2 main actors
  • Directed 20 extras to sing in time, dance and act
  • Edited first draft to show to Marc
  • Marc came to our premises for 4 hours to make detailed changes

Film Newham at Work A re-edit of 2 films into 1 for screening at the end of year conference
  • Met with Kerri Simpkins (Newham Business Improvement & Quality officer) who instructed which parts of the 2 films we had produced in 2004 she wanted in the new 10-minute version
  • Re-edited the films following Kerri’s instructions

Film Creativity in Newham Well Made 05 event to publicise the 7 creative agencies featured.
  • Liased with 7 creative agencies in Newham and allocated subjects to film
  • Filmed and interviewed 7 local artists, the area and agencies
  • Sent draft DVDs to all agencies asking for their feedback
  • Once agencies, Newham Council and Jess Tyrell (Germination) had fed back, made recommended changes to the edit

Film My Experience of CPA Supervised mental health Film Group in producing a 20-minute film about CPA.
  • Allocated roles for members
  • Discussed ideas and planned schedule with members making them aware of deadlines
  • Guided members on interviewing, themes of questions and getting the best out of subjects
  • Taught members how to film sequences in a traditional documentary style
  • Taught members how to make use of natural and incidental light
  • Prepared members for filming, they did all the filming themselves using their own broadcast filming equipment
  • Guided members on logging tapes and transcribing interviews
  • Taught members how to plan a paper edit
  • Edited the footage with direction from members

  • Met groups before filming to discuss film-making process
  • Filmed 2 Carers talking about their experiences
  • Filmed 2 Carers groups, the Newham area and subjects doing daily activities
  • Filmed 2 Carers at home doing carer’s duties
  • Edited film using ideas from the group
  • Showed draft film to Carer’s group for feedback
  • Carer’s Group requested an add-on at the end with words to convey main messages
  • Requested text was added with a split screen of group (to make it more visually interesting)

Film This is How We Do It Public Information Video shown to residents to show what staff do behind the scenes.
  • Met with Sandra Spalding (Re-Housing Settlement Officer) to discuss content and objectives of the film.
  • Wrote a script with Sandra who presented the film at the beginning and the end.
  • Filmed Sandra presenting
  • Interviewed and filmed 9 professionals talking about their roles on the estate
  • Filmed around the Brooks Estate
  • Presented a paper edit of film before starting the edit
  • Showed Sandra 1st draft who was very happy with this version
  • Arranged for 300 DVD and 50 VHS duplications for residents on the estate

Film Portraits of Recovery Taught 17 mental health users to produce, film and direct a 20-minute film.
  • Provided Oxleas with 3 service packages to consider
  • A package was agreed for Flexible Films to work for 8 months enabling members to film and direct a 25 minute film for a local World Mental Health Day event
  • Flexible Films helped the group purchase broadcast quality filming equipment
  • 17 members were trained in all areas of production – members planned, filmed and directed
  • Flexible Films regularly met and fed back the progress to staff
  • Guided members on themes, approaches and styles of filming
  • Encouraged members to work together as a team
  • Taught members how to transcribe and log their footage
  • Showed members how to select the relevant material and produce a paper edit
  • Edited the film following members’ paper edit and directions
  • Edited members’ stills photography into the film
  • The group recieved the Oxleas Recognition Awards for Best Practice and were runners-up in the Health and Social Care Awards in 2005
  • The film was also screened several times on The Community Channel

Film Moving On Documentary following 3 survivors of abuse. Film is used to train staff and inspire survivors.
  • Met with Manchester Survivors’ Group History project to discuss issues that needed to be raised in the documentary
  • Met with subjects to put them at ease – we needed to be very sensitive as it was the first time some of the subjects had talked so openly about their childhood experiences
  • Explained to the subjects the film-making process
  • Filmed 3 subjects talking about their experiences
  • Filmed subjects with friends, family, walking and doing activities
  • Mastered film after all subjects and MSGHP had viewed and agreed to it

Film Smiths Point Renovation A film for Council residents as they prepared for the renovation of their tower block.
  • Filmed organisations related to project i.e. Mullaleys Building Contractors, CHA
  • Attended a local residents meeting to explain film project
  • Interviewed and filmed local residents discussing their hopes and concerns

  • Filmed in and around the estate
  • Presented a paper edit before editing started
  • Edited to a 20-minute informational film with contact details of all departments
